'Head in the Clouds'
Throughout my life, I've been told by teachers, friends and family that I've 'got my head in the clouds', but I never understood the meaning of this. After some research, I found that it meant 'to be absentminded or impractical'. Personally, I'd prefer to say I've always had big ideas and plans that may look unconventional or impractical, but are actually well thought out. As artists, we must be ambitious and have bold aspirations that other people may not understand or relate to, because this gives our work purpose and individuality. Ultimately, viewing the world in a creative (perhaps even unorthodox) way allows us to find inspiration.
To create my self portrait jar, I glued pieces on cotton wool to the inside, as the texture reminded me of clouds. I built a swing out of a lollipop stick (which I added details to with oil pastel) and string, because this created a playful element that paired well with my theme. Instead of painting the jar itself, I chose to display it with a blue background to represent the sky. It was important for me to keep the jar clear, so it was easy to see inside- much like how I'm somewhat easy to read as a person. Overall, I feel that the simplicity and lightheartedness of my jar is reflective of my own personality.
