Life Drawing Practice

In preparation for life drawing with a model, we completed a course about the basics. I started by marking out movement lines onto photos, to find the overall movement of each pose. I then drew out the angles of the shoulders, hips and the curves of each of the limbs. I practiced drawing these lines next to the photos and then checked the angles back on the picture. I added heads with a line for the eyes and the centre of the face to show angles. I also used triangular placeholders for the hands and feet and practices positioning them at different angles.

Moving on, I used vertical (plumblines) and horizontal lines to check the alignment of different features on the figure. I compared the angles between the shoulders, the hips and the feet to the photograph to make sure I had drawn the pose correctly. I also used the lengths of different body parts (e.g. the head, arm and foot) to check the proportions of the figure and made adjustments accordingly.

Finally, I practised fleshing out my figures using straight lines, which allowed me to pick up on nuanced curves and angles. I mapped out areas of tones and highlights and then added detail by shading and refining my marks. Overall, the course has taught me how to accurately draw poses and has helped my understanding of how the body fits together. I hope to take these skills through into the drawings with a model and will practice using the techniques more quickly.
