Construction Visualisation

My final visualisation for the construction task is based on the movement of waves, and explores the fragile relationship between humanity and nature..

I designed a dress that features boning to create wave-like shapes in the shoulders and main body of the garment, which is also heat pressed to give it a spring-like shape. I was inspired by the work of Issey Miyake to use this technique because I wanted the dress to move up and down when the model moves. The effect of each section moving one after the other reminds me of shock waves and is redolent of a tsunami, which adds an underlying sense of danger to the outfit. The large shoulders demonstrate power, either of the model or the waves, so the boundary between the power of humans and nature is blurred. By wearing the dress, the model seems to be taking control of the elements, however the size and movement of the dress gives it a life of its own. I would make the dress out of a blue, pleated satin catches the light like the sea in the sun/moonlight. The garment would be shown on a runway, with a dark background and a colourful light that picks up underlying colours in the material, for example a subtle red that represents the danger of waves.

In further work, I would like to bring in ideas of power and danger into other mediums like painting or animation, which could better present a narrative.
