With the aim of creating a stop motion animation based on humanity, I researched artists to explore different techniques. Firstly, I looked at Leo Crane, focusing on 'The Foundling', which shows hands playing the piano; a bird growing from the hands and then being set free. It tells the story of a boy who turns to music to deal with difficult emotions, which allows him to achieve his dreams. I think the transitions are smooth effective because the charcoal can be easily manipulated and altered, so I could use this media for my own animation.
I watched Sharon Lui's 'Ash to Art Animation', which shows what happened when an art school burnt down and artists created work from the ashes. The animation clearly and effectively presents the narrative, partly because the transitions are smooth. One way this has been achieved is by making the charcoal slowly fill the screen and then working back into it with chalk or eraser. I would like to use this technique to make my animation flow.
