From my research into altruism, I decided to focus on psychological egoism, which is the concept that humans are never truly selfless. I wanted to present the idea that altruism is ultimately just for show and is not championed in the modern world.
I decided to portray these ideas through a large-scale installation, featuring a church made out of latex stretched around metal poles. The latex would be almost see-through, so the viewer would be able to see how empty the church is, showing that its values are actually meaningless. The church would be suspended off the ground to show that the values of altruism are hard to reach. I would do this using a structure similar to gallows, to suggest the modern world doesn't value community anymore, and people are encouraged to be self-motivated. The installation would be in an abandoned landscape, to further the message that the values of altruism have been forgotten.
